New York, NY—April 11, 2019—With the exception of the aforementioned Malang song, the rest of the album was written entirely in real-time.
In this excerpt from Malang’s forthcoming book, The Power of Numbers, we explore the process of writing, recording, and releasing songs with the help of a few tools.
“A lot of my friends in the recording industry have this mindset where if you write a song, it has to be perfect.
It’s like a perfect marriage, or a perfect dream,” says Malang, whose real name is Ben Zemlin.
“I always wanted to write songs, but I’ve always wanted them to be this perfect combination of emotion and sound.”
This is the process that the songwriters behind the Malang EP spent weeks working through, recording the songs as they went.
The results are not what you might expect, but in this excerpt, Malang talks about the process, the pitfalls of using the same template for multiple songs, and the lessons that he learned.
